A Barrow County man remains hospitalized after being bitten multiple times by a friend’s dog.
The man, Michael Cape, was visiting Scott Bowen when Bowen’s dog, an American Bulldog and Pit Bull mix, attacked.
According to Barrow County Animal Control Director Jimmy Terrell, Cape was familiar with the dog.
“He knew the dog and the dog knew him, but something set the dog off and he attacked,” he said.
Terrell said when Bowen attempted to rescue his friend from the dog, he was bitten as well.
Barrow County Animal Control Officer Danyal Harper said Bowen suffered numerous lacerations and puncture marks to his arms and scratches on the chest. Cape sustained more serious injuries including major lacerations on his legs, chest and arms. According to Harper, large chunks of flesh were missing from Cape’s arms necessitating surgery. The injuries were of such severity that Cape is expected to require rehabilitation in order to recover.
Barrow County Fire and Emergency Services dispatched Engine 5 and Med Units 5 and 6 to the Rockwell Church Road address to treat the injured men. Both men required transport to Gwinnett Medical Center.
Bowen has since been released from the hospital.
Harper said animal control has responded to two previous incidents involving the dog. In both cases, no charges were filed.
“With the dog’s previous history, there were other circumstances that hindered any further investigation,” Harper said. “The accusing parties failed to turn in appropriate paperwork to verify the bites were legitimate.”
In bite cases that do not involve severe or life-threatening injuries, protocol requires that animal control quarantine the animal for a period of ten days. A judge reviews the case and determines whether or not the animal should be seized.
“In the previous cases, there were no charges issued – just the required quarantine,” Harper said. As a result, animal control had no probable cause to remove the canine from its owner.
“In this case, the history of this dog and [with] the severity of the case, we did opt for the automatic seizure,” Harper said.
The dog is currently quarantined at the Barrow County Animal Shelter. The shelter has received a court order instructing that the dog be euthanized. The order will be carried out this week.
Had Mr. Bowen had this mentality, his "friend" won't be in the hospital.
You probably should not refer to this guy as stupid. You appear to not be the most educated girl in town. I'm not saying i'm the smartest guy you will ever meet but i'm also not bashing a guy that i know nothing about and talking about his "ovious stupidy". Also, since you used the word "ovious" twice we can assume that was not a typo.
I'm just sayin'...
As far as the comment Gagirl left, I believe she is entitled to her own opinion; however, her opinion is based on he said she said from what I can gather from her comment.
I myself am a pit bull owner. My pit bull has never showed aggression towards a person or dog. I raised him that way but I also understand how protective pit bulls can be and I do not put in a situation that can be dangerous to him, any person, or another dog. Cape knew the dog and the dog knew him according to the article at hand. Any dog can turn and have a moment. That is risk anyone takes when they reach down to pet a dog. My husband’s parents have a miniature dachshund, this dog is maybe 14 pounds; however she has had a lot of back problems and will snap at anyone who touches her the wrong way. When I first met her, my husband told me this about her but I want to pet her anyways. So I did, I got bitten. That was my choice. Now my choice is to not touch her. All I am saying, is do not judge the dog or the owner without knowing any more information about the situation. The article is very vague about the relationship between Cape, Bowen and the dog.
I couldn't care less about what happened. I was just reading the story because my father lives in that area of town and i saw where Gagirl was bashing the dogs owner and judging a guy she new nothing about. I don't really care about people spelling everything right. I just get annoyed when people who appear very uneducated and ignorant start bashing people about subjects they know nothing about.
Now if you would stop trying to be Gagirl's knight in shining armor and actually read the story you would sound a bit less ignorant as well.
