At first blush, the brief federal investigation of a Winder woman over comments made in frustration about her TV service is hilarious.
Beth Whitehead, 78, was talking with a receptionist at the FCC about her converter box problems when she made the comment that she’d like to “shoot” the person who messed up her TV service.
The next thing she knows, commandos from Homeland Security wearing bullet proof vests are standing in her yard demanding to talk to her.
Funny, yes. But also frightening.
Since when did the federal government feel the need to have jackboot agents harass ladies who complain about their TV service?
Under the cover of “homeland security,” a lot of crazy things have happened in recent years from the overreaction of federal agents. While there is a legitimate need to investigate suspected terrorism, many agencies have used that fear to extend their own power in inane ways.
The searching of little old ladies in wheelchairs at airports is just one common example of how outlandish our “security” system has become. The long closure of Bear Creek Reservoir in our own county because of “terrorism” fears is another example of how government uses fear to maintain control.
Since 9-11, Americans have increasingly ceded their freedoms to government. In the name of “security,” our privacy and freedom of movement has been eroded.
It’s a frightening thing when the government abuses that authority to investigate an American citizen for spurious reasons such as happened with Ms. Whitehead. Why didn’t they just call the local sheriff to determine if anything was amiss?
This newspaper doesn’t believe in conspiracy theories involving black helicopters circling around our homes at night. That makes for good television, but is hardly reality.
We do believe, however, Ms. Whitehead nailed the real problem at Homeland Security: “I think they’ve got a bunch of damn idiots working for them,” she said.
Indeed.
In this instance, do you think a receptionist hundreds of miles away who does not know Ruth Whitehead, should be able to read Whitehead's mind and know that she was "only kidding" when Whitehead said she would like to shoot someone? How would you expect the receptionist to know the difference? Would you have her err on the side of caution?
How would you report the incident if in fact Whitehead drove to the local cable company and shot and killed the receptionist there because of some deranged reasoning related to the new digital TV requirement? After all digital TV screwed up her television. Would you not be the first to thump your chest and loudly proclaim that Whitehead actually called the FCC and said she would like to shoot someone? Would you not demand to know why someone had not followed up on this treat!?
Would you have investigators following up on possible threats to assess their validity do so without taking the precaution of putting on a bullet proof vest? Have you not heard that law enforcement officers have been killed simply because they knocked on someone's door?
Like it or not 9-11 did in fact change the way people look at each other. The way people perceive threats has been changed. Many thinly veiled threats have turned out to be just talk, but some have not. Its those threats that have turned out to be real that have deadly consequences for us all.
There have been way to many work place and business killings. And because someone didn't take it seriously.
All they had to do was run a background check, realize she had a clean record, CALL the LOCAL law enforcement and have THEM pay her a visit.
THEN it WON'T have been an issue. But to send federal agents to her home in the middle of the night was STUPID AND A WASTE OF MY TAX PAYER DOLLARS!!!!!
Either way - a TOTAL WASTE of tax payer dollars.
Theodore Kaczynski, the Unibomber, had no criminal record and committed his crimes over the course of 17 years. Ted Bundy had committed the majority of his rapes and murders before being arrested for the first time. He committed the rest after escaping custody, before being recaptured. David Berkowitz killed six people before being arrested. Ed Gein, who committed horrendous acts of unbelievable horror, had no prior criminal record.
And if she hasn't had a record in 78 years - I serious doubt she would start.
A little common sense goes a long ways
I STUPIDLY MADE AN OFFHAND REMARK "MAYBE WE CAN GO IN THERE AND BLOW THEM OUT"! 911 CALLED THE LOCAL POLICE. HE CALLED ME AT HOME AND THEN CAME TO MY WORK SITE WITH A STATE PATROL OFFICER, TO INTERVIEW ME AND ARREST ME. AS I SAID EARLIER, I AM 82 YRS OLD, SERVED IN THE US ARMY FOR 30 YRS,(23 ACTIVE)HAVE BEEN RETIRED SINCE 1968. IT WAS AN OFFHAND REMARK AND MENT NOTHING EXCEPT MY EXASPERATION AT THE STUPID PEOPLE BLOCKING A PUBLIC CROSSING TO CHECK TRAIN WHEELS. NEEDLESS TO SAY, THE OFFICERS DID NOT ARREST ME, BUT THEY DID SAY "I HAD MADE A TERRORISTIC THREAT"!!! THERE IS DEFFINATELY NO SUBSTITUTE FOR COMMON SENSE!!!!!
"I was only kidding!" has never been a valid excuse for careless words. Your age and military record are irrelevant in this case.
He would have gotten a lot further by complaining to the city council about taking so long to get started on that underpass.
