An Auburn man was arrested last week after an alert CVS employee witnessed the man stealing items from the store.
The CVS employee advised that the suspect, Colby Jacob Knight, 23, of 320 Kilcrease Road in Auburn, left the store without paying for some toothbrushes.
The employee provided a description of the suspect and his vehicle along with the vehicle tag number.
The employee said she became alarmed when Knight called the store shortly after leaving wanting to know why she was trying to get his tag number. When Knight called a second time, police had already arrived at the store and spoke to Knight on the phone.
Knight was advised to return to the store immediately and return the toothbrushes.
Within ten minutes, Knight returned to the store and apologized, saying he did not want to go to jail.
Knight immediately handed a toothbrush head refill to one of the responding officers. When the officer asked where the rest of the merchandise was, Knight opened the door of his truck and retrieved six similar items. The total value of the merchandise was over $184.
When Knight opened his door, one of the officers noticed a marijuana joint inside the vehicle. Knight said the joint belonged to someone else who had driven his truck. Two other persons in the truck, Harold Rivers and Cherish Owens, also denied owning the joint.
During a consent search, officers located a brown prescription bottle with 25 Xanax pills.
All three subjects were detained and transported to the Auburn Police Department for further investigation.
During the course of the investigation, Knight revealed that he had stolen the toothbrush heads from CVS in order to return them to Wal-Mart in exchange for a gift card. Knight admitted doing this at other locations. Knight also admitted that the Xanax pills were his.
Knight was charged with shoplifting, not having drugs in their original container, possession of a Schedule IV narcotic with intent to distribute and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.
