LETTER: Yearwood has 'shaken up' government

Dear Editor,
Barrow county commission chairman Danny Yearwood has done exactly what I expected him to do when I voted for him. He has shaken up Barrow county government.

I don’t know Mr. Yearwood, but I have met and spoken with him and I do believe that he has the best interest of Barrow County at heart. He has been criticized for not replacing managers and administrators that have resigned. I’m willing to bet that the same folks that are critical of those decisions would be among the first to cry foul if he had asked the commissioners to increase the millage rate in order to pay those salaries.

Barrow County joins almost every county in the nation in that we have a budget crisis. When revenues are down, you have three choices; cut spending, raise taxes or borrow money. Chairman Yearwood has made the same choice that I would have made. He has chosen to cut spending. Danny Yearwood has a thankless job and has chosen to execute his office as “CEO of the county” according to the county charter.

As long as public safety is not compromised, I will continue to support Chairman Yearwood.

Mr. Moss,

I hate to break it to you but it has already occurred and will continue to. Staffing has been reduced in the FD by the chairman...again, the Sheriffs Office is short staffed and facing more cuts and there is not much hope in sight for the next budget year.

I couldn't believe anyone would vote for little Danny Yearwood. They must have been newcomers or uinformed voters. What will Barrow County look like in 4 years. Rampant crime, businesses not wanting to relocate here, disgruntled employees-morale is already being destroyed. I wouldn't want to work under Yearwood. Thanks Danny. Its a big jump from selling clunkers to running a multimillion dollar business. You must have been surprised.

Purango -- people didn't vote for Yearwood -- they voted against Garrison. There IS a difference. Had there been anyone else running, old Danny Boy never would have been elected.

And Mr. Moss, it's not so much what he's doing BUT how he's going about it. There is a right way and a wrong way. Those without management skills generally chose the wrong way.

If all other possible cuts have been made to our budget then I think we should raise taxes but only with the stipulation in the resolution that it is a temporary increase and would be reduced on a ratio equal to an increase in taxes revenues collected.This should be done on a bi-yearly basis; and continue until the tax base is back where it should be. I for one am not willing to suffer any cuts in the budgets of the fire department or the sherriff's department. So raise taxes as described above....

John, I'm with you. I would much rather have my taxes increased than have cuts to the sheriff, fire or any emergency services. If I ever need a sheriff, ambulance or fireman -- I want them Now, Yesterday - not when they can get there because they don't have the personnel!!!

Make cuts someplace else, -- turn the air down in the BOC meeting room -- Can't attend a meeting without long sleeves -- do whatever it takes but leave the sheriff's department alone.

Too late! Doug Garrison already flushed the county down the toilet. These problems were inherited from Doug. I don't agree with some of Danny's ways of getting things done, but I do believe he is doing it for the right reasons. I salute him for standing up and doing what needs to be done.
