With many of his wrestling competing in other sports, Winder-Barrow High School wrestling coach Chad Horne had to make the most of the time he had this summer.
Horne was able to get three solid weeks of summer work in with his Mat Bulldoggs as they began early preparations for the upcoming 2009-10 season.
“The school year ended late for us and we are starting back early,” Horne said. “However, we took advantage of what time we could.”
Several returning WBHS wrestlers practiced twice a week and then competed against other area schools at Clarke Central High School in Athens.
“We did the same thing a couple years ago when I was at Social Circle,” Horne said. “It seems to be beneficial.”
The WBHS coach said he is not a big believer in camps since it is hard to get the kids together during the summer.
“They are stretched thin anyway,” Horne said. “The work we were able to get in during the summer should help us once the new season gets here.”
Working during the summer was something Horne used as a motivational tool for his wrestlers.
“We had two who showed up consistently last summer and those are the two who made it to state,” Horne said. “I hope they see how working in the summer helps you improve. It was something I made sure to point out to them.”
Horne is entering his second season directing the Mat Bulldoggs. WBHS will continue to compete in Region 8-AAAA during the upcoming school year.
