The Georgia State Patrol last week arrested two Barrow County residents following a hit-and-run accident involving a pedestrian.
The driver, Tammy Ann Hockman, was charged with numerous offenses.
According to the state trooper called to the scene, Hockman was driving a 2001 Ford Focus south on County Line Auburn Road at Fox Run Road and, while negotiating a curve, drove her car into the northbound lane and off the east shoulder where it struck the pedestrian.
She then left the critically injured man, Christopher Smith, at the scene and drove home to a trailer park about a mile away.
Her husband, Gary Hockman, reportedly drove the vehicle back to the scene and left it in the same position it was in when it struck Smith.
After Gary Hockman brought the car back, he attempted to get back in it to leave, but bystanders could tell that he had been drinking, and they would not let him get behind the wheel, said Trooper Matthew Miles.
A Barrow County sheriff's deputy picked him up while he was walking on the side of the road, and Tammy Hockman was arrested at their home, Miles said.
Witnesses, including workers on the roof of a nearby structure, assisted Smith by trying to stop his bleeding and by comforting him until county paramedics arrived, he said.
The pedestrian was flown by Emory Life Flight to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. He was still listed in critical condition as of July 23, more than a week after the July 15 incident, the trooper said.
The state patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team is investigating how the incident occurred, and the case has been referred to the criminal investigation division of the Barrow County Sheriff's Office. The Hockmans reportedly know the victim, Miles said.
Tammy Ann Hockman, 42, of 1124 Hwy. 211 NW, Winder, was booked into the Barrow County Detention Center and charged with one felony – causing a serious injury by vehicle – and six misdemeanors, including failing to provide assistance, leaving the scene of an accident/hit & run, DUI, driving on the wrong side of the road, operating a vehicle with slick tires, and having an expired vehicle tag or decal.
Gary Wayne Hockman, 36, was booked and released on charges of driving under the influence and driving on the wrong side of the road.
Christopher Smith's family & friends
A victim less crime ie drug possesion, urinating in public, etc. can and will get you
arrested with a bond of possibly 60-100 thousand dollars running a man down with your car causing massive injuries or death and you can get out of jail for as little as 20 thousand dollars.
This needs to stop now!
Our Justice System is pathetic. It is all about getting the most dollars not about justice. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm!
THINK ABOUT IT!
