A comprehensive list of outstanding taxes due to Barrow County is being published in this week's Barrow Journal.

The list covers 2006, 2007 and some of 2008 past due taxes. The total owed is $2.9 million.

Fi Fas — tax leins — were taken on the property in May. The number of tax leins is 10 times the normal amount, according to county officials. Some of the 2,900 listings are for lots owned by developers who are now out of business.

If not paid, the property could be taken and sold by the county to recover the past due taxes.

Yearwood and Billy Bramlett won't be on the list this time. Of course, elected officials never should have been deadbeats from the beginning.

The county needs to exhaust all efforts to collect these taxes, even if it includes seizing the land (in accordance with the law) and selling it on the courthouse steps!

If you don't pay your taxes and allow all these people to loose their jobs and allow all this hardship on the county as a whole, then I say sell, sell, sell!

I have a neighbor who owes 38,729.88 -- and that's just the property I know about. That's more than most Barrow County residents make in a year. My question, why were the taxes allowed to go 2, 3 and in some cases 4 years past due? Why did the tax commissioner not go after these people earlier?

2.9M -- the county is only in the red 1.9M -- who the h*** dropped the ball on this one?

I hope they were one of the pink slipped one's.

What if some of these people who owe tax money have already lost their jobs and have no choice but to fall behind financially...Then what?

That's tough. Too bad. Boo hoo. People in this fix overextended themselves, living the high-life they couldn't afford. Time to pay the piper -- and stop trying to live in a land of swimmin' pools & movie stars. Sure hurts to bang yore noggin on that ol' see-mint pond.

Then they sell the property on the court house steps and those that planned and saved their coins will have an opportunity to bid on the property ....and pay the back taxes to the county. This is what you call a Lose-Win-Win situation ---sad but true and necessary.

Talk about recalls --Can we recall the Tax Commissioner? Worthless in her job if we have several years of back taxes. Can not wait to see what kind of deals are going to be available at the courthouse steps. Let the bidding begin.

There are two pieces of property that abut my property. The owner of these properties is 3 years in the rears. I so am looking forward to bidding on these pieces. Both lots have trailers that will make great income properties. I can simply tell the current renters - walk that rent check next door from here on out. LOL

Good point about Melinda Williams, the Tax Commissioner. Perhaps its time to shift the spotlight to her and call her onto the carpet.

Mrs Williams, please explain to the voters and citizens of this county why you are not doing your job.

She should be the first to go'''. Sell all of them NOW. They are the ones that don't keep their properties up. Yards unmowed, trash and litter every where. Kill two birds with one stone sell to someone who will pay taxes and keep Barrow County clean.

Does anyone know if these properties are actually going to be sold, and if so, when and how? A lien doesn't really mean anything if no one is going to do anything about it.
