A Bethlehem man has been charged with setting fire to his mother’s house. According to investigators, 29-year-old Charles Scott Mason resided at the house on Gifton Thomas Road with his mother and just before 8 p.m. on April 2 set a fire that caused extensive fire and water damage.
After setting the fire, he went to a Dollar General store nearby and allegedly committed another crime – theft by shoplifting.
While he was incarcerated in the Barrow County Detention Center on charges related to the theft, investigators obtained a search warrant for his mother’s home.
Working together, investigators from Barrow Fire & Emergency Services and the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office determined the fire had been intentionally set.
On Saturday, Mason was charged with arson in the first degree.
He also is facing a charge of giving false information or a false name to a law enforcement officer.
