A Statham man was killed early Sunday in a single-car wreck on Hwy. 82 near the Barrow-Jackson county line.
The driver, Michael Bernard Smith, 37, of Statham, was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital but died of his injuries, according to a Barrow County Sheriff’s Office press release.
His passenger, Ronald Lewis Thurmond, 41, of Statham was arrested a short time later after leaving the scene on foot. Deputies arrested him on outstanding Barrow County warrants.
The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident. The wreck happened at about 12:28 a.m. Sunday as Smith’s white, 1989 Cadillac was traveling west on Hwy. 82. The car suddenly crossed over into the eastbound lane of traffic, left the roadway, and struck several trees.
