A Statham man was killed early Sunday in a single-car wreck on Hwy. 82 near the Barrow-Jackson county line.

The driver, Michael Bernard Smith, 37, of Statham, was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital but died of his injuries, according to a Barrow County Sheriff’s Office press release.
His passenger, Ronald Lewis Thurmond, 41, of Statham was arrested a short time later after leaving the scene on foot. Deputies arrested him on outstanding Barrow County warrants.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident. The wreck happened at about 12:28 a.m. Sunday as Smith’s white, 1989 Cadillac was traveling west on Hwy. 82. The car suddenly crossed over into the eastbound lane of traffic, left the roadway, and struck several trees.

I would just like to say how sorry we are to Michelle and her children and to Mikes Family. Mike was a good friend to many and will always be missed. Our Prayers are with all of you during this most difficult time. God Bless You Mike and May God always watch over the loved ones that you leave behind
that will now have to pick up the pieces and carry on without you. Our Hearts and Prayers are with you.

Michelle ( Sissy ) , You never have to THANK me for anything. I will always be here for you. Just as I said before, I'm only always a phone call away. I want you to know that I'm so proud of you. You took a huge step forward on Sunday. I'm happy that you asked me to be there for you. You took this tragedy and made something great come from it. You have a long road ahead of you but you are a strong woman and I know you will make through this. Remember what I said to you Sunday ? Mike was a wonderful person with a great personality and will truly be missed by the staff at the Texaco in Statham, GA. We send our sincere condolences to Michelle and his family. You all are in our prayers.May god bless you and be with you all during the days to come.

My prayers go out to the Smith family and the Peters family,Mike was important in all of you guys life,Stay strong,because our GOD makes no mistakes in what he does.just take a look around yourself and ask what can we do?
