Repairs to the new Winder-Barrow High School sports athletic complex will cost an approximate $100,000, the board of education learned last week.
The new complex, or fieldhouse as it is commonly called, is approximately two years old and already has several areas needing repair. The building initially cost $600,000 to construct, which was paid for up front by the BOE. That amount is to reimbursed by the W. Clair Harris Foundation, a group that funds projects within the high school’s football stadium confines.
After a lengthy BOE meeting last Thursday, the board asked superintendent Ron Saunders to contact the representative of the W. Clair Harris Foundation about additional funds for repair work. The estimated costs will be from $80,000-$125,000.
BOE member Connie Wehunt has been very critical of the process in which the fieldhouse was constructed and has expressed concern that additional funds will now have to be used to make repairs. Volunteers were used to construct to the facility in order to save money on the project.
But BOE chairman Bill Bramlett said the board has not failed the taxpayers. He said some repair work needs to be done, primarily on the roof, but he would give the fieldhouse project an overall grade of 90 percent.

HAAAAA!!!!! Good one Mr. Chairman, and you are correct. That statement would normally be considered absurd considering the taxpayers are going to be stuck with another $100K in tax liability for a non-essential project that you wanted done "on the cheap" and as a result, had virtually no BOE (meaning TAXPAYER) oversight. I’m still amazed (not really) that the general contractor’s name responsible for this project has been conveniently omitted from all news accounts. Is that because he is perhaps a politically connected good ol’ boy……hmmmm?
But I agree with you because it’s not the BOE’s fault. It’s YOUR fault! Perhaps if you had paid the $21K in back taxes that you’ve owed the county for the past 2 years, the BOE would have had the money to fund this project correctly in the first place, instead of relying on your shoddy oversight and stewardship of tax dollars that everyone else paid…EXCEPT YOU!
Do Barrow a favor: RESIGN NOW DEADBEAT!
All teachers, students and administrative staff deserve better leadership. Not paying your taxes, and being the Chairman of the School Board, is appalling.
All the taxpayers that paid their taxes by December 15th, deserve better.
I would be curious to know just how those repairs will be broken down? Does that include brand new luxury accommodation for the team?
This money could be spent in better areas. It also appears that select schools in the county somehow end up with more money than others. I will never forget how Apalachee High went without the most basic facilities for its first years. We struggled! It was ridiculous to not have the things we needed for our first few years in existence. We had no sports fields, no band equipment. When we finally got these things, it was crap. I'll never forget having to play on brand new tennis courts that were surrounded and covered by mud on a constant basis. That is something I will not forgive the county for. Apalachee finally has some nice things going for itself, but it took years and the work of our own individuals to get them.
