LETTER: Trash a major problem in Barrow

Dear Editor:
I would like your paper to wake up the citizens of Barrow County. The trash on our roads is deplorable. I walk my dog in the morning and take three bags, one for the dog and two to pick up the garbage that gets thrown out of vehicles.

I picked up 60 lbs. of trash last week in my development. I filled four large plastic bags and brought them home until garbage was picked up. I drove down Jackson Trail the other day and it looks like snow, but oh it’s styrofoam. Half of the citizens do not recycle.

Georgia is one of the most beautiful states we have and it seems like the residents are trying to foul it all up. Isn’t there a verse in the Bible that says “we are to be the shepherds of the earth?”

Georgians should be ashamed. You should get something started because putting this on the opinion page won’t do it.

It needs to put this on the front page

I guess you would agree then that our over paid, underworked director of Keep Barrow Beautiful isn't earning her $60K per year?

How can you blame the director when parents have not taught their children to keep the environment clean? People don't even pick up trash in their front yards,why aren't the schools teaching recycling? The citizens have to change their way of thinking about the enviroment.Drive down Patrick Mill from the Atlanta hwy to 316 and tell me what you see.
IT'S DISGUSTING.And you want to blame someone in city gov. for this?

Put the blame where it belongs on the citizens of this county. It is awful to see the trash build up around a lot of homes, and abandoned houses that are delapated. These need to be cleaned up (destroyed) also not just taxed. If it is not livable (condemed) why not make the owners destroy them. They are a hazard for citizens, esp. children who wander around. I would not want to set my self up for a law suit if someone got hurt on my property. There is a house on Hwy 53 that was burned and part is still standing, been that way a long time, there are others in the county also. Old cars should have a current tag or destroy(recyclye) those also, or have a special permit for no more than 2 junks or non working cars and trucks. We are a poor to medium county and most citizens look the part (nasty) by how we live.

Why can't we as citizens of this beautiful state of Georgia, keep it clean? Why are we throwing our trash out of the car window in the first place? The government of Barrow is not to blame when your parents did not teach you to keep the environment clean.

Why does everyone have to blame the government for every thing? Why not put the blame where it needs to be on the people. My parents always taught me to leave a place better than I found it. They had to do this because so many others could give a care less and just dump their trash where ever they feal like it. I have been to other countries around this world and some of our roads remind me of some of the third world contries I have been to. To blame our country is nothing more than a cop out!

I also have been to many countries around the world duing my tour of duty with the U.S.Navy. The Asian countries would put Georgia to shame, They not only wash their streets down in Japan,they are immaculate. The Italians wash their marble steps on their hands and knees. No one throws their garbage out the windows like Georgians do.

If everyone who litters had to pick up trash for a mile
on one of our busiest roads, they might think twice. In
fact, I wish that were the punishment rather than
a fine.

I was driving down Patrick Mill the other day and honked at the car in front of me for throwing his empty cigarette pack out the window. To my surprise he was headed to the same store as I was and he had the nerve to ask why I honked at him. When I told him it was because he was littering his reply was "I don't have a trash bag in my car." Oh yeah, that it's a good excuse. Is there any reason why the rest of the country thinks Georgia is filled with idiots?

I, too, am appauled at the amount of trash on the sides of our roads in Barrow County. I contacted Keep Barrow Beautiful in March and was told that the "clean-up" crews were not allowed to work in freezing temps or in the rain. A majority of the clean-up crews are prisonmates. The temps for that week in March were in the 60s with lows of 40s in the evenings. I have seen a small improvement in the trash situation, but not enough to claim Barrow is beautiful.

Does Barrow have a Adopt A Highway program? And where are the road crews that are supposed to cut grass? The intersection around the new Publix is a real disgrace. Who designed that? A big mudhole with grass over 3 feet tall? Come on Barrow, get it together.

Wow, we all live in this county,we pay taxes and a mortgage for our properties,maybe the biggest investment we will make is our home. so how much does it cost to keep up your own yard and surroundings, remember it is a reflection of your self.Do the right thing throw your trash in a can, not out the window onto our streets.And whats up with throwing your cigarettes out the window, man that's nasty and lazy, do you throw them on your floor at home ?. Be proud of where you live !!
